Steele comes second in first round

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Embattled GOP Chairman Michael Steele came in second in the Republican National Committee’s first round of voting.

He’s fighting to keep his post atop the party for another two years.

Reince Priebus, the Wisconsin Republican Party chairman, won the first round with 45 votes. Mr. Steele got 44 votes. Maria Cino got 32, followed by Saul Anuzis and Ann Wagner.

No one has dropped out of the race so far.

Ballots are being cast by 168 committee members. Eighty-five votes are needed for victory. Several rounds of votes are expected.
