SMALL OVERHAUL: The Food and Drug Administration announced updates to how medical devices are approved, but backed away from broader changes opposed by industry.

LOBBYING EFFORT: Medical device makers have lobbied Congress for months to dissuade the FDA from making major changes to the system used to approve most devices. Industry advocates say establishing new device classes and other proposals could slow medical innovation.

OUTSIDE INPUT: The FDA said it will defer decisions on more drastic proposals until it hears from experts at the Institute of Medicine later this summer.
