ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Providence Alaska Medical Center says there has been an outbreak of a drug-resistant staph infection in babies in its newborn intensive care unit.
The Anchorage Daily News reported Thursday that 14 babies since March have contracted the infection, also known as MRSA. Cases are considered mild or moderate.
State epidemiologist Kim Porter says 17 other infants have been found carrying the bacteria on their skin or noses, but did not get sick from it. A Providence spokeswoman says it has been several weeks since any new infections were discovered, and there are no active cases.
Providence called in state epidemiologists in April to help stop the bacteria from spreading and possibly causing more infections. The state is still actively involved.
