Metro plans to offer extra service on July 4 to accommodate crowds attending Independence Day events downtown and the Washington Nationals day game.
Rail service will operate from 7 a.m. to midnight, with near rush-hour service levels from 6 p.m. to midnight, transit officials said Tuesday.
The Smithsonian station on the mall will be closed most of the day July 4 and reopen for entry-only at the conclusion of the fireworks.
Metro officials are directing riders to use either the Foggy Bottom-GWU, Metro Center, Archives Navy Mem'l-Penn Quarter, Gallery Pl-Chinatown, Judiciary Square, Union Station, L'Enfant Plaza, Capitol South or Federal Center SW stations to access the mall.
Officials also said there will be no scheduled track work anywhere on the system on July 4.
Metro expects to provide in excess of 500,000 rail trips on July 4 with crowded trains leading up to the scheduled 9:10 p.m. fireworks show.
