LONDON (AP) - Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is in London for the world premiere of his new movie “Larry Crowne.”

The Academy Award-winning actor _ in London Monday for the world premiere of his new movie “Larry Crowne” _ says the film is about not giving up to cynicism. Hanks directed, co-wrote and also stars as the protagonist in the movie, which is about a middle-aged man who reinvents himself by going back to college after he loses his job.

“I think this film is about a battle against cynicism we all have,” said Hanks, 54, on the red carpet.

“Larry is not in a hopeful space … It’s easy to surrender to the cynicism, and a lot of people have to face it, but Larry proves that the forward motion of him going back to school gives him the faith that something is going to happen. That is not only an upbeat message, but a very wise one,” he said.

Julia Roberts plays his romantic interest _ a jaded teacher at a local college.

Hanks was joined at a movie theater in a London shopping mall Monday evening by fans and celebrities including fellow actor David Hasselhoff and The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Ronnie Wood.
