Former big league backup Chris Cron was able to celebrate two days in a row. His son C.J, a first baseman at the University of Utah, was a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Younger son Kevin, an Arizona high school first baseman, went to Seattle in the third round.

The sons of Dante Bichette and Dwight Smith were selected on the draft’s first day.

Among other notable names drafted Tuesday was TCU lefty Matt Purke, who was once considered a potential No. 1 overall pick until a sore shoulder limited his season. He was the 14th overall pick by Texas out of high school two years ago, but slid to Washington in the third round this year.

Texas A&M right-hander John Stilson was also considered a potential first-rounder, but he recently announced he needed surgery to repair a torn labrum. Still, Toronto took a shot by drafting him in the third round _ 12 picks after Purke went.

Pittsburgh opened the second day of the draft by taking Texas high school outfielder Josh Bell, a slugger who has first-round talent but has said he intends to go to the University of Texas.

The draft finishes Wednesday with rounds 31-50.
