PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy, son of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, is engaged to be married.

Former aide Sean Richardson said Monday that Mr. Kennedy, a 43-year-old bachelor, got engaged Saturday in Rhode Island to sixth-grade schoolteacher Amy Petitgout. No wedding date has been set.

Mr. Kennedy told the Associated Press last month that he was living in New Jersey with his girlfriend. In a written statement, he recalled the title of his father’s book, “True Compass.” He said Ms. Petitgout was his own compass.

Ms. Petitgout has a 3-year-old daughter named Harper from a previous marriage. She said in a statement that Mr. Kennedy loves her daughter as his own.

Mr. Kennedy decided last year not to run for a ninth term representing Rhode Island in Congress. His father died in 2009 after many years representing Massachusetts in the Senate.
