MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY (AP) - A Spanish singer's decision to smoke a cigarette during a news conference could cost his hotel $11,000.

Uruguayan authorities say they are gathering photos and videotape to determine if the Sheraton Hotel in Montevideo violated strict anti-smoking laws by allowing Joaquin Sabina to light up inside.

Reporters tried to warn Sabina, but he quipped that he saw an ashtray and didn't want to insult the Uruguayans by not using it.

Sabina gave a concert Tuesday night and then left the country.
