NEW YORK (AP) - Mega-selling author James Patterson has handed out his first round of "Book Dollars for Scholars."

Patterson, whose many novels include "Along Came a Spider" and "Kiss the Girls," announced Monday that 56 high school students received book gift certificates ranging in value from $250 to $5,000. Winners submitted essays on how a particular book inspired their choice of career.

The certificates can be redeemed at bookstores affiliated with IndieBound, a branding campaign started by independent booksellers.
