PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed relief pitcher Mike Crotta on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Jose Ascanio from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Manager Clint Hurdle says Crotta is dealing with inflammation in his right (pitching) elbow. The rookie has struggled recently and gave up four runs without retiring a batter in a 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Crotta is 0-1 with a 9.28 ERA in 15 games this year.

Ascanio hasn’t appeared in a major league game since August 2009. He spent last season recovering from right shoulder surgery. Hurdle says Ascanio, 26, will be available immediately, but the manager is unlikely to use him in a pressure situation right off the bat.
