Gadhafi appears on state television
TRIPOLI — Libyan state television showed footage of President Moammar Gadhafi meeting and talking with what were described as tribal leaders in a Tripoli hotel and a news presenter said the meeting took place on Wednesday.
Col. Gadhafi has not appeared in public since April 30, when a NATO airstrike on a house in the capital killed his youngest son and three of his grandchildren.
“We tell the world: ‘Those are the representatives of the Libyan tribes,’ ” Col. Gadhafi said as he pointed to his visitors and then named a few of them. He was wearing a brown robe with a hat and sunglasses and sat in an armchair near a small round table.
Meanwhile in Misrata, Libyan rebels captured the strategic airport there on Wednesday after a fierce battle with Col. Gadhafi’s troops, marking their first significant advance in weeks.
Obama sibling seeks release of American spy
JERUSALEM — A spokesman for Israeli chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger said Wednesday that President Obama’s half-brother has vowed to press for the release of Jonathan Pollard, an American convicted of spying for Israel more than two decades ago.
Avi Blumenthal said Wednesday that Rabbi Metzger met with Mark Ndesandjo, who was born to a Jewish mother, on a visit to Israel to “discover his roots.”
Moscow endorses U.S. killing of bin Laden
MOSCOW — Russia on Wednesday backed the United States’ right to hunt down and kill al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, as its leaders prepared to hold talks with visiting Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated in an interview released Wednesday that Moscow fully supported Washington’s position and did not question its right to strike inside Pakistan.
“Our position is very simple,” RIA Novosti quoted Mr. Lavrov as telling the Moskovskie Novosti paper in an interview scheduled to be published Thursday.
