A D.C. man pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexually abusing three girls under the age of 12, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District said.

Charles G. Pettis, 39, pleaded to charges of first-degree child sex abuse with aggravating circumstances, attempted first-degree child sexual abuse with aggravating circumstances, and second-degree child sexual abuse with aggravating circumstances. He faces a likely sentence of 10 1/2 years to 37 1/2 years in prison when he is sentenced on July 21. He also will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Authorities say Pettis was living with his former girlfriend when he sexually assaulted the girls, all of whom were related to his former girlfriend.

The youngest of the three children was 7 or 8 years old at the time of the assault and the oldest child was 11 at the time.
