LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don’t be so quick to hail ‘democracy’

- The Washington Times - Tuesday, May 31, 2011

The clear, concise and unequivocal message this week from President Obama to all parties concerning Israel and the Palestinians was, "I want you to like what you hear."

Unfortunately, Mr. Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton see moderate Arabs and Muslims and democratic movements breaking out all over the Middle East. No one can argue against the bravery and commitment of those in that area of the world getting shot on the streets and thrown into jail, but the fruits of their revolutions have not yet matured. Revolution in France brought the Terror and the Napoleonic Wars; in Russia, it brought 70 years of Bolsheviks; and in South and Central America, countless "El Supremos" promised relief from the enslavement of the previous "El Supremo."

Once a freely elected Arab government peacefully turns over control to a freely elected opposition, then and only then should we chirp about "Arab Democracy." The fruits of revolution are on mixed terms, at best.
