PARACHINAR, Pakistan — A Pakistani government official says fighter jets have attacked militant positions in a tribal region close to the Afghan border, killing at least 18 suspected insurgents.

Jahanzeb Khan says five targets in Mirkalam Khel and Akhon Kot were hit on Tuesday. Both places are in the Orakzai region.

He says reports received from field informants and an aerial survey revealed at least 18 suspected militants were killed.

It was not possible to independently verify the information.

Orakzai and other tribal regions in the northwest are home to al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

The army has launched several offensives against the insurgents over the past four years, but they have proved a resilient foe.
