Del Potro pulls out of match against Nadal in Madrid Open

MADRID — Juan Martin del Potro withdrew from the Madrid Open with an injury that could keep him out of the French Open.

The former U.S. Open champion said a pain in his left hip forced him to pull out of Thursday’s third-round match with top-ranked Rafael Nadal.

Del Potro, the world’s 32nd ranked player, first felt the pain on course to winning the Estoril Open on Sunday.


Kentucky’s Calipari to coach Dominican Republic team

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — John Calipari, who led Kentucky to the Final Four last season, has been chosen to coach the national team of the Dominican Republic and try to qualify it for the 2012 Olympics.

Federation general manager Eduardo Najri said the choice was made official Thursday and Calipari posted on his website that he has formally accepted the head coaching position.

“This will be a great learning experience for me to be able to coach against some of the best minds in international basketball. I know that being in the NBA helped me do a better job of preparing our young men to reach their dreams and this opportunity will do the same,” Calipari said.


Mayweather Jr. charged with threatening security guards

LAS VEGAS — Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing new misdemeanor harassment charges accusing him of threatening two homeowner association security guards outside his Las Vegas home.

The charges filed Thursday in Las Vegas stem from an October dispute over parking with guards in the gated community where the undefeated prizefighter lives.

Mayweather’s lawyer, Karen Winckler, didn’t immediately respond to messages from the Associated Press seeking comment.
