BATON ROUGE, LA. (AP) - LSU officials say first-year women’s basketball coach Nikki Caldwell is pregnant and that the child is due in March, when college basketball is in its postseason.

LSU athletics spokesman Michael Bonnette says the 39-year-old Caldwell waited until she was three months into the pregnancy to make it public. He says she intends to coach as late into the pregnancy as possible and that her assistants will lead the team when she’s absent.

Caldwell tells The Advocate ( http://bit.ly/tPHk2J), which first reported the news, that the father is former Oakland Raiders running back Justin Fargas, whom she met while she was head coach at UCLA.

No. 21 LSU opens its season Monday night at Wichita State.
