Last year, the bishop for the Diocese of Arlington, Paul Loverde, assured his flock that the sordid funding history of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) had come to an end. Yet the American Life League has just issued its report on the 2010-11 CCHD grantees, and believe it or not, the list of offending grantees is actually expanding.

The report documents that of the 218 organizations funded by CCHD, 14 are actually involved in activities contrary to church teachings, and 40 are actively involved in coalitions with such activities. Thus, 54 groups (24 percent) funded by CCHD are involved in anti-Catholic work. The number and percentage of offending organizations have actually increased over the past year from 51 groups. These 54 organizations received a total of $1,863,000, out of the $7,608,000 distributed in CCHD grants in 2010-11.

Although CCHD no longer funds the likes of disgraced ACORN, it continues to prop up several ACORN-like, leftist, community-organizing entities - all in the name of “social justice.”

Good Catholics would do well to do their homework before contributing to this year’s CCHD second collection, set for Nov. 20.
