Other highlights of the report, “Births: Preliminary Data for 2010”:

• The teen birthrate fell to 34.3 births per 1,000 teens ages 15 to 19, the lowest level ever reported for the U.S.

• The number of births reported to this age group [-] 372,252 [-] was the smallest since 1946.

•The total number of U.S. births was 4,000,279, which is 3 percent lower than in 2009.

• The percent of births by cesarean section fell slightly to 32.8 percent, the first drop in this rate in more than a decade.

• The preterm birthrate fell for the fourth year in a row, to 11.99 percent. However, the very low preterm birth rate stayed stable at 8.15 percent.
