HOUSTON — Texans coach Gary Kubiak woke up Wednesday to the bad news he knew was probably inevitable.
Doctors told quarterback Matt Schaub that he'll need season-ending surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his right foot, and Houston put Schaub on injured reserve and signed Kellen Clemens.
Kubiak was hoping Schaub might still return this season after he was hurt in Houston's 37-9 win over Tampa Bay on Nov. 13. But Schaub met with several doctors and talked to Kubiak early Wednesday about the disappointing diagnosis.
Matt Leinart will start for Houston (7-3) at Jacksonville (3-7) on Sunday. Rookie T.J. Yates, a fifth-round pick, will be the backup, and Clemens will take the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.
Chiefs sign Orton off waiver wire
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs claimed former Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton off waivers, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Kansas City was in the market for a veteran quarterback after Matt Cassel went down with a season-ending injury to his throwing hand. Orton became available when the Broncos waived him Tuesday.
The former Chicago Bears starter, who passed for more than 3,000 yards each of his first two seasons in Denver, was benched six weeks ago after a 1-4 start. The Broncos decided to go with Tim Tebow as the starter, making Orton expendable.
Peterson to miss game if he doesn't practice Friday
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings star unning back Adrian Peterson will not play Sunday against Atlanta if he cannot practice by Friday, coach Leslie Frazier said.
Peterson missed practice Wednesday, and his sprained left ankle remained in a walking boot. He sustained the high ankle sprain Sunday against Oakland. The Vikings (2-8) have little incentive to force their franchise player back onto the field.
Bills' Jackson placed on injured reserve
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have placed running back Fred Jackson on season-ending injured reserve because of broken bone in his lower right leg.
Jackson's best season was cut short after he was hurt in the second half of Buffalo's blowout loss Sunday at Miami. He ranks third in the NFL with 934 yards rushing and trails only Chicago's Matt Forte with 1,376 yards from scrimmage. Backup C.J. Spiller becomes the new starter.

• CARDINALS: Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb (turf toe) went through a substantial practice for the first time since his injury three weeks ago and sayid he is optimistic he will be able to play Sunday at St. Louis.
