Mr. Harpootlian says the early months of the campaign can be a time for potential vice-presidential candidates to demonstrate “their ability to walk, talk and chew gum at the same time.”

Republican strategist Rich Galen said politicians like to be in the mix as potential vice-presidential candidates, even if it’s just to increase their stock for a future political campaign.

“You want to be mentioned,” he said.
