The backup to veteran nose tackle Barry Cofield first struck in the third quarter, bowling through the Giants‘ line and throwing down Manning for a 6-yard loss. That forced the Giants into third-and-15 and, eventually, a punt.

Of no solace to the Giants was that Neild actually missed his assignment on the play, landing him in position to harass Manning.

Then on the last play of the fourth quarter with the Giants reeling, Manning faked a handoff. Neild didn’t bite and dropped the quarterback for an 8-yard loss.

Neild didn’t expect to sleep Sunday night after the performance. Besides, there was film to watch from a night he couldn’t quite believe.

“This was a real big day for us,” Neild said. “It was all about adjusting to the speed of the game and how the Redskins play.”

And it’s one day Neild won’t forget.
