“We basically become New Mexico,” Mr. Borick said. “It wouldn’t be the prize that it is now.”

Mr. Rendell said the move could backfire on Republicans, noting Mr. Obama’s weak position in various polls.

“If the election were held today, I think Gov. [Mitt] Romney would probably carry the state,” Mr. Rendell said. “Be careful what you wish for.”

But Mr. Pileggi said the issue is one of basic fairness.

“The goal is to more closely conform our Electoral College delegation to the will of the voters,” he said.
