The Aruban Court of Appeal has upheld a judge's ruling to keep a Gaithersburg man, suspected in the disappearance of a travel companion, detained for 60 days, prosecutors said Wednesday.
An attorney for Gary Giordano, 50, filed an appeal to the Aug. 31 ruling days after it was made. Mr. Giordano has been held in Aruban custody since Aug. 5 as law enforcement continued to investigate the possible drowning of Robyn Gardner, 35, his travel companion. No criminal charges have been filed against him.
At the end of the two-month detention, prosecutors said they expect to file charges against Mr. Giordano but declined to discuss what those charges might be.
Ms. Gardner, of Frederick, Md., left on a trip to the Caribbean island with Mr. Giordano on July 31. The two were supposed to return stateside Aug. 5. However, Mr. Giordano reported Ms. Gardner missing Aug. 2, claiming she was swept out to sea while the two were snorkeling.
