Giants’ Matt Cain lands biggest contract for right-hander

SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Cain has that hefty new contract he hoped for before opening day.

Cain and the San Francisco Giants agreed Monday to a $127.5 million, six-year contract, the largest deal for a right-handed pitcher in baseball history.

The agreement adds $112.5 million over five years to the $15 million salary for 2012 that was remaining in his previous deal. Cain gets a $5 million signing bonus as part of the new contract and $20 million annually from 2013 through ‘17.

Among pitchers, only the Yankees’ CC Sabathia and the Mets’ Johan Santana, both left-handers, agreed to larger contract. Sabathia got a $161 million deal from 2009-2015 that had an additional year and $30 million in guaranteed money added last fall. Santana agreed to a $137.5 million contract from 2008-13.

The previous record contract for a right-handed pitcher was Kevin Brown’s $105 million, seven-year deal with the Dodgers after the 1998 season.

Five-game ban for Jimenez

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Cleveland Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez has been suspended for five games and fined by Major League Baseball for intentionally throwing at Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki during a spring training game.

Jimenez will serve his suspension during the first five games of the season unless he asks the players’ association to appeal the decision by MLB senior vice president Joe Garagiola Jr.

Before the penalty was announced, Jimenez said he wasn’t going to apologize to Tulowitzki after hitting his former Rockies teammate on the left elbow Sunday.

RANGERS: Josh Hamilton is suffering from migraine headaches, and the Texas slugger is day to day. Hamilton was to be evaluated before the club’s exhibition game Monday night against its Triple-A affiliate, Round Rock. The center fielder left Friday night’s game against Colorado with a tight left groin.

BRAVES: Atlanta relief pitcher Cristhian Martinez was arrested early Monday and charged with drunken driving, days before the team’s regular season starts. A test showed his blood alcohol level registered at 0.13, according to a police report. The legal limit to drive in Georgia is 0.08.
