The adjoining neighborhoods of Kent and Palisades just off MacArthur Boulevard are home to some of Northwest Washington’s most distinctive homes, many with contemporary flair. Towering trees, flowering shrubs and perennial flowers surround many of these homes, giving the community a parklike setting in the midst of the city.

Residents in these communities can walk to shops, parks and restaurants and stroll along the Capital Crescent Trail or next to the C&O Canal. Near the Chain Bridge, this area offers easy commuting to downtown Washington, Georgetown, Maryland, Virginia and both Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International airports for frequent travelers.

A private lane off MacArthur Boulevard in Kent leads to Timberwood, a secluded wooded enclave of 10 contemporary-style homes built in 1969. These homes belong to a homeowners association that maintains a lovely pond adjacent to the lane and provides snow removal for the lane as well as leaf removal in front of each home.

One of Timberwood’s most tranquil homes, at 5347 MacArthur Blvd. NW, is on the market for $1,250,000. This midcentury-modern single-family home of wood, brick and glass rests within a lush garden with mature trees and plants. This contemporary home, wrapped in walls of glass and with skylights overhead, has been updated and meticulously maintained.

The home has three finished levels with approximately 3,000 finished square feet, a two-car garage and additional off-street parking for three cars. Every level of the home has views of trees, belying the location in the midst of the city.

Flagstone steps lead from the front drive past flowering shrubs and trees to the dramatic red-painted wood double front doors. The doors open onto a two-level entrance hall with stone flooring, an oversized skylight and a large hall closet. A short flight of hardwood stairs leads to the main level, which has an open floor plan and plenty of breathtaking views of the trees.

Hardwood flooring extends from the hall into the living room, which has a “floating” gas fireplace with its hearth about a foot above the floor. Built-in wood cabinets flank the fireplace, and recessed lighting adds to the natural light flooding into the room from multiple floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors.

Just outside the living room is a 450-square-foot screened porch, a true second living room with slate flooring, a ceiling fan, several skylights and built-in bench seating at one end. A balcony that runs across the front of the home is accessible from the porch. Just outside the porch are a patio and terraced garden with space for a barbecue and a built-in potting table.

The house’s open dining area with hardwood flooring also has a sliding glass door to the screened porch and is open to the kitchen and family room or media area, which have marble flooring.

The kitchen includes a granite center island with a cooktop, granite counters, stainless steel appliances, a coffee bar, a built-in desk and a separate wine cooler. Walls of pantries and cabinets provide abundant kitchen storage. One pantry, next to the open family room, holds a television and other media equipment.

The main level also has a sleek contemporary powder room with slate flooring and a square sink with a modern glass faucet.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, a ceiling fan and a private balcony. Hardwood flooring blends with the wooded views outside, and three double-door closets line one wall. The master bath has marble flooring and a glass-enclosed shower.

At the back of this level, the rear bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, a ceiling fan and a private screened porch that seems to float among the trees. This bedroom has a walk-in closet with built-ins.

Two more bedrooms, each with a large closet, overlook the terraced garden. The three bedrooms share a hall bath with a marble whirlpool tub and shower and a skylight. A linen closet is nearby, along with a laundry chute. Another laundry chute is near the kitchen.

The finished lower level has a spacious fifth bedroom or family room with a tall window, a closet and a charming exposed-brick wall. Adjacent to this room is a full bath with a sleek black-and-glass shower. Nearby is a spacious laundry room with a slate floor, counter space, cabinets and a wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinets.
