INDIANAPOLIS — Andrew Luck’s first NFL throw was a 63-yard touchdown pass, and the rookie led Indianapolis to three first-half touchdown drives and a 38-3 victory over St. Louis in Sunday’s preseason opener.
Luck, under pressure on his first attempt, dumped off a screen pass to Donald Brown, who darted up the field, then cut across and outran the Rams’ defense for the score.
Luck finished 10 of 16 for 188 yards with two TDs in 24 plays for the Colts. Sam Bradford, the No. 1 pick in 2010, was 7 of 9 for 57 yards in two series for the Rams.
Urlacher targets Sept. 9 return
BOURBONNAIS, ILL. — Injured Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher expects to be ready for the regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
Urlacher has left knee pain and has not practiced since July 31. He had not talked about his injury situation until Sunday.
“Sept. 9 I’ll be ready to play,” he said. “I’m pretty sure. That’s really all that matters to me.
Urlacher sprained his medial collateral ligament and partially sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in the Bears’ regular-season finale against Minnesota.
There was no need for surgery, and he rehabbed the injury throughout the team’s offseason workouts before returning to practice at the start of training camp.
