Taking Names: Duran Duran seeks to reschedule canceled concert

- - Monday, August 27, 2012

British rock band Duran Duran is hoping to reschedule a Pittsburgh concert that was called off Sunday because of the illness of keyboard player Nick Rhodes.

The band's website said Sunday night's concert at Stage AE on the city's North Shore was called off as a result of Mr. Rhodes' illness, the same reason the band canceled Saturday's concert in Atlantic City, N.J.

Fans are being encouraged to hold onto their tickets because the band hopes to announce a rescheduled concert in Pittsburgh within the next few days.

Doctors think Mr. Rhodes has a viral infection.

Mr. Rhodes told fans in a message on the band's website that he's been urged to rest until doctors can complete more tests on his illness.

Rosie O'Donnell marries, sells paintings for charity

Rosie O'Donnell has announced that she married her fiancee, Michelle Rounds, in a private ceremony in June, just days before Ms. Rounds had surgery to treat desmoid tumors.

The 50-year-old actress also said Monday on her blog that she is selling original paintings on eBay to raise money for the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation.

A spokeswoman for Ms. O'Donnell confirmed the nuptials and fundraising efforts.

Ms. Rounds was diagnosed with desmoid tumors in June. She and Ms. O'Donnell wed in New York on June 9, and Ms. Rounds underwent surgery June 14. Desmoid tumors occur rarely and can affect almost any area of the body. The tumors can be fatal.

Ms. O'Donnell has had health issues of her own. She said Aug. 20 that she recently suffered a heart attack.

Fire again strikes studios of filmmaker Tyler Perry

Officials are investigating a fire at filmmaker Tyler Perry's Atlanta studios, the second blaze in the past four months at the filming complex.

The fire was reported just before 11 a.m. Monday, and there were no reports of injuries. Authorities say the fire was contained to the roof, which had been undergoing repairs at the time of the blaze.

On May 1, more than 100 firefighters battled a blaze that ripped through a simulated streetscape at the studios, sending flames about six stories into the sky.

Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin J. Cochran has said the cause of the May fire would be recorded as undetermined. Chief Cochran said the intensity of that fire consumed any evidence that would lead to a cause of ignition.

Wonder Woman, Superman a couple in new DC comic

Wonder Woman and Superman are an item, locking lips in a passionate embrace as the pair realize there's no one out there like them.

The couple's kiss is the culmination of a dramatic story in Justice League No. 12, which marks the first full year since DC relaunched its stable of heroes with new stories, new costumes and revised origins.

DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee, who has drawn each issue of Justice League since its debut, said the canoodling in Wednesday's issue is not a stunt or an alternate-reality smooch.

"This has been in the works for some time, and we certainly wouldn't have pulled the trigger on it without there being great creative benefit to the liaison," he said in an email. "Beyond the joy and sorrows of new love, there are potentially huge ramifications and dramatic ways this single relationship between these iconic characters will change the entire political and interpersonal landscape of the DC Universe."

In the 1980s, the pair had a brief fling, but Superman went on to marry Lois Lane. They also kissed in Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Strikes Again" a decade ago. In a 2006 epilogue to 1996's "Kingdom Come," the couple asks Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, to stand as godfather to their unborn child.

Since DC relaunched its characters and universe nearly a year ago, some of the origins have changed — Wonder Woman is now the daughter of Zeus — and the costumes have, too.

One aspect that did not survive the relaunch: Lois Lane's role as Superman's love. She's still around, but the two have never dated, nor are they likely to.

R&B singer Usher wins custody of sons

Grammy-winning R&B singer Usher has been awarded custody of his two sons, ending a long legal fight with his ex-wife.

A person with knowledge of the decision said a judge ruled Friday that the 33-year-old singer will have primary custody of Usher Raymond V and Naviyd Ely Raymond. The person was not authorized to release the information and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Usher, whose real name is Usher Raymond IV, married Tameka Foster Raymond in 2007. They divorced two years later. Mrs. Raymond fought for full custody of their sons, while Usher initially asked for more visitation rights.

Usher testified in May that Mrs. Raymond spit at and tried to fight his girlfriend during one visit and alleged that his ex-wife hit him during the dispute.
