A Fairfax County man was arrested and charged Wednesday with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his roommate, police said.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 9100 block of Barrick Street in the Merrifield area around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and found that a resident of the apartment, 38-year-old Oscar Rivera, had been stabbed multiple times. He was found dead in the bathroom.

By early Wednesday, Fairfax County police arrested Mr. Rivera’s 20-year-old roommate, Jose Ivan Lopez Castro, and charged him in the attack.

The two men were in a fight before Mr. Rivera was fatally stabbed, county police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said. Several scratches and cuts — injuries sustained during the altercation — can be seen on Mr. Rivera’s face in his mugshot photo.

Police did not say why the men were fighting.

This is the eighth homicide in Fairfax County this year, Ms. Caldwell said. Five of those homicides — including this latest slaying — appear to be committed by acquaintances of the victims, she said.
