One man was killed in a Monday morning car crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway after his car veered off the roadway and struck a tree, Prince George's County public safety officials said.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. on the parkway between Annapolis and Riverdale roads in Landover, according to the county fire and EMS department. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, which was traveling northbound on the parkway when it left the roadway and hit a tree in the median.

The man, who was described as in his 40s, was trapped inside the car but eventually was freed and flown by helicopter to a trauma center. He died at the hospital.

The U.S. Park Police crash reconstruction unit was investigating the incident and the northbound lanes of the parkway were closed into the afternoon. Neither Park Police nor county officials immediately identified the man killed, and authorities did not provide further information on the cause of the crash.
