LETTER TO THE EDITOR: It’s not the guns, stupid

To those who professed outrage, genuine or hyped, at the National Rifle Association's recent statement on the Newtown, Conn., school shootings, I ask you to consider this: The AR-15 rifle that was used in the shootings and that has gained so much notoriety has been in civilian hands since the late 1950s ("Gun grabbers won't heed NRA's sensible advice," Politics, Wednesday).

Other semi-automatic firearms have been in common use for more than 100 years, yet we didn't have mass shootings in the past. What is different today? The guns didn't change -- the culture did.
