A Prince George's County Council member was clocked driving more than 105 mph on the Capital Beltway in her county-owned vehicle but didn't receive a speeding ticket, police said Tuesday.
Council member Karen Toles of Suitland was stopped Feb. 22 near Branch Avenue after a county police officer saw her speeding and making an unsafe lane change, according to a statement issued by the Prince George's County Police Department. Police would not confirm how fast Ms. Toles was traveling.
But a police source with knowledge of the case said Ms. Toles was driving 55 miles over the speed limit when she was stopped around noon. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the case.
Ms. Toles, a Democrat, was issued a $90 ticket for the unsafe lane-change violation and a written warning for excessive speed.
"I was leaving a meeting and was late for my next appointment," Ms. Toles said in a statement acknowledging the citation and warning. "I consider moving violations serious matters and I regret the incident. I intend to pay the appropriate fine for these traffic violations."
In a statement, police said the warning citation issued for excessive speed "is consistent with the typical discretion applied by police officers to speeding motorists."
The incident, which was caught on the ticketing police officer's in-car camera, is under review to determine if correct action was taken, according to the statement.
The traffic citation issued to Ms. Toles could not be found in online court records, though other traffic citations issued the same day were located.
Ms. Toles, who represents an urban swath of the county located along the D.C. border and inside the Capital Beltway, is expected to participate in a public-safety discussion alongside officials from the police department and state's attorney's office Wednesday. The event is meant to educate senior citizens on crimes targeting them and to offer safety tips, according to a press release about the event.
