A man died overnight while in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department, a spokesman confirmed Thursday.

Police are still investigating the cause of the person’s death, but MPD spokesman Officer Araz Alali said that preliminarily the death does not appear “suspicious” in nature.

The prisoner, who has not been identified, died while being held at the department’s central holding facility at 300 Indiana Avenue in Northwest.

Police believe the prisoner was brought to the holding facility by another agency, either the District’s Protective Services Police Department or Federal Protective Services, but officials were unable to verify which agency on Thursday morning.

When reached Thursday morning, a spokesman for Federal Protective Services was unable to immediately confirm whether or not the prisoner had been in the department’s custody.
