Two dead after
apparent murder-suicide in Shirlington

- The Washington Times - Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Police found the bodies of a man and a woman in a Shirlington apartment Tuesday after what officials say appears to have been a murder-suicide.

Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said a man and woman, both 30 years old and Hispanic, were found by officers in the 4500 block of 31st Street.

The three-story brick apartment complex is located about a half mile from the popular strip of shops and restaurants in downtown Shirlington.

Officers were called to the home at about 2:30 p.m. after a family member found one of the victims inside the apartment.

It was unclear whether the man and woman were married or boyfriend and girlfriend, but Mr. Sternbeck confirmed the two were in an intimate relationship.

Mr. Sternbeck said based on a preliminary investigation police are treating the two deaths as a murder-suicide.

The incident marked the first homicide in Arlington County in two years, police said. The last recorded killing was a stabbing in March 2010.
