A group of Potomac residents fighting the construction of private soccer fields on Montgomery County Schools-owned land filed an appeal with the Montgomery County Circuit Court on Tuesday, challenging the Maryland State Board of Education’s decision that the local board could lease the land.

Members of the Brickyard Coalition are trying to stop the Montgomery County School Board from leasing the land to Montgomery County Soccer Inc. The school board has leased the 20 acres along Brickyard Road to an organic farm for the past 30 years.

Coalition members first filed an administrative appeal with the State Board of Education, which upheld the local boards decision to lease the land to MSI.

Members of the coalition said they did not expect the first appeal to be fair.

The Brickyard Coalition maintains that MSI, the Montgomery CountyBoard of Education and County Executive Isiah Leggett worked together secretly for two years to reach the deal.
