A Sunday night shooting involving two police officers and two men in Mount Vernon left one man dead, officials said.

According to police, at 11:20 p.m. two officers approached two men acting suspiciously near Frye Road and Madge Lane. One man ran away.

The officers chased him and a struggle ensued, during which the man fired a gun at them. One officer fired back, hitting the man.

The man was taken to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

Neither officer was injured, and the other man ran away.

The investigation is ongoing and both officers have been placed on routine administrative leave.
