Quarterback Robert Griffin III, the Heisman Trophy winner last season at Baylor, ... more >Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was the target of an alleged extortion attempt by a former walk-on on Baylor's basketball team, according to multiple reports and court records.
Richard Khamir Hurd was arrested by the FBI and charged Monday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas with extortion that crossed state lines.
While Griffin isn't named in the complaint, multiple reports linked him to the case.
According to an affidavit by FBI special agent John Truehitt, Hurd contacted an agency based in St. Louis, Mo., on June 18 and claimed to have "derogatory information" on one of its clients. If Hurd were not paid a "substantial sum of money," he threatened to release the information to the media.
The affidavit identified the agency's representative by his agency's location and initials, B.D. Both match Griffin's agent, Ben Dogra, of Creative Artists Agency.
"The agency" played along with the request, the affidavit said, and a representative, identified as B.S., met Hurd in Waco on June 22. Hurd signed a nondisclosure agreement, gave B.S. the "derogatory information" and received a check.
Truehitt was present, working undercover, during the exchange.
Hurd was arrested Friday in Waco.
The Redskins declined to comment. Dogra and Hurd's lawyer didn't immediately return requests for comment Monday.
