It comes as no surprise to me that Georgetown University invited Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to speak to Public Policy Institute graduates ("Georgetown catches flak for Sebelius invite," Nation, Wednesday).
I always refer to Georgetown as "the formerly Catholic university." In the 1980s, the school's policy was to withhold student activity funds from homosexual organizations because those groups violated Catholic teachings. However, when the D.C. government threatened to withdraw a sweetheart land deal with Georgetown because of the policy, the university caved. When President Obama spoke at Georgetown in the early days of his administration, the university was told to cover the crucifix in the venue in which the president was to speak. That's right - the university complied and covered it.
There even was a debate within the university's administration whether to have a crucifix in the classrooms for fear of offending non-Catholic students who voluntarily chose to attend a Catholic university. Does the name Sandra Fluke come to mind?
