Scotland, which has long struggled with a dire alcohol-abuse problem, announced this month plans to set a minimum price of 80 cents per unit - which would mean an average bottle of wine could cost no less than about $7.55.

Simon Antrobus at the drug and alcohol treatment charity Addaction is hopeful that the proposals will increase public awareness.

“We’re beginning to see people thinking, ‘I have to do something about this,’ ” he said.

“The challenging bit is getting people to understand the potential harmful consequences of alcohol. People need to know their limits.”
