Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon and safety Brandon Meriweather likely will play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles if they don’t suffer any injury setbacks before then, coach Mike Shanahan said after Friday’s practice.
“I’m hoping there’s no setback,” Shanahan said. “I’m hoping they both play.”
Garcon admittedly is not fully healthy, but he does not want to have season-ending surgery to repair his torn plantar plate. The Redskins decided they would rather have Garcon at less than full strength than not have him at all.
“It feels all right,” Garcon said. “I should be good to go on Sunday. We’ll see tomorrow, and I should be out there giving everything I’ve got.”
Garcon is frustrated that resting his foot did not return him to full health.
“At some point, you’ve got to just go out there and play,” he said. “You want to be at 100 percent. You want to give everything you’ve got, but you just can’t mind it too much. You’ve got to give everything you can to try to find a way to beat your defender at not 100 percent.”
Garcon said he feels better than when he played through pain in Weeks 4 and 5 against Tampa Bay and Atlanta, respectively.
“It’s 99 percent on me and one percent up to coach, but Coach has the big one percent,” Garcon said. “You know, it’s basically all up to Coach. I tell him I feel good. I’m not going tell him I can’t play or I feel hurt, so you know, I’m always saying I’m good to play. He always has the final say-so.”
Meriweather, who sprained his left knee in Washington’s second preseason game, was set to return against Tampa Bay on Sept. 30, but he re-injured it in a freak pre-game collision with receiver Aldrick Robinson.
“This is the best I’ve felt for a while,” he said.
