LOS ANGELES (AP) - Adam Sandler has risen to the top of the box office with his animated comedy “Hotel Transylvania,” which debuted with $42.5 million.

Opening at No. 2 with $20.8 million for the weekend was Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s sci-fi thriller “Looper.”

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:
