While each neighborhood in the District has its boosters, regardless of whether they love Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill or Columbia Heights, nearly everyone can find something to love about Dupont Circle.

The circle itself, with its double-tiered white marble fountain, offers a great people-watching venue, especially when a flash mob starts dancing or during early-morning outdoor yoga classes on weekends. The neighborhood, while primarily residential, includes dozens of shops, restaurants and clubs along Connecticut Avenue and 17th Street Northwest.

Many of the Victorian-style homes in Dupont Circle have been converted into condominiums, although some remain elegant single-family homes. The semidetached Victorian-style brick home at 1763 P St. NW, one block from the circle, has been restored on the exterior and converted into two upscale contemporary-style condominiums.

The building’s penthouse unit, on the market for $1,085,000, has approximately 1,600 square feet, two terraces and two parking spaces, nearly unheard of in this urban neighborhood. The two parking spaces are in tandem behind the home. Residents can walk two blocks to the Dupont Circle Metro station or travel on foot to Logan Circle, Adams Morgan, West End, Foggy Bottom and downtown Washington for work, gatherings with friends, and cultural activities.

This two-level penthouse has been transformed with contemporary flair, yet the home’s original leaded-glass windows and original woodwork blend naturally with newer elements. The brick exterior of the building is accented with elegant arched windows, stone columns and decorative stone accents around the windows.

The front door opens into a small foyer with stairs leading to the penthouse unit. The hardwood stairs leading to the unit’s main and upper levels are accented with custom-designed steel stair railings. Recessed lighting throughout the home adds to the natural light flooding through tall windows in every room. Both levels of the penthouse have hardwood flooring; a central speaker system provides high-quality sound throughout the home.

The open first level has a wide bay in front with two floor-to-ceiling windows that face south and overlook P Street. A cushioned window seat with storage underneath provides extra seating during a party as well as the perfect perch for reading or enjoying a respite from city life.

The living area has a third arched window that also faces south. On one wall is a wood-burning fireplace with an elaborately detailed wood mantel and adjacent built-in shelving.

Just beyond the living area is the open dining area, which has a tall window, a tray ceiling, and cove and recessed lighting. Near the dining area is an elegant powder room with a tiny contemporary-style stainless steel sink.

At the back of this home, the owners created a large gourmet kitchen with an abundance of maple cabinets, upgraded stainless steel appliances, and plenty of food preparation and serving space on the granite counters. The kitchen includes a pantry with pull-out shelves, a double window over the sink and a tall window at the end of the room. Appliances include double wall ovens, a dishwasher and a cooktop.

Space for a breakfast bar or a small casual dining table is available just under the tall window. A terrace off the kitchen provides a quiet space overlooking a lovely stone church and its surrounding park, as well as space for a barbecue.

The stairs to the upper level include a wide skylight overhead that adds more light to the main level and hallways. Oversized transom windows above the doors of each room on this level also maximize the natural light. A closet with a washer and dryer is at the top of the stairs.

At the front of the house is the master bedroom, which has soaring ceilings, a ceiling fan and one of this home’s most attractive features: a private, south-facing balcony with views across the rooftops and treetops of the neighborhood. The bedroom has an entire wall of built-in closets with storage space above.

The master bath features a high transom window, ceramic tile flooring, a granite counter on the double-sink vanity, a glass-enclosed shower and a whirlpool tub.

The upper level also has a guest bedroom that overlooks the church behind the home. This bedroom has walls of built-ins, including a custom-designed Italian Murphy bed that swivels, a wall of closets and built-in office space with a desk. Adjacent to the guest bedroom is a renovated full bath.
