A historic, updated mansion with a spacious 40-foot living room is on the market in Rockville. Known as Rose Hill Mansion, the property has a rich history dating back to 1803.

Originally a Victorian-style home when built in 1908, Rose Hill was extensively renovated in 1935 when it was owned by the founder of the Chestnut Lodge Hospital, Dr. Ernest Bullard. With a stone exterior, two bay windows, black shutters and a red door, the home has a stately Colonial presence that invites guests to come inside and take a peek.

The six-bedroom, 51/2-bath home at 215 Autumn Wind Way sits within an extensive garden setting on a 1.6-acre lot. A long driveway circles around the entire home, which is on the market for $1,995,000. A stone portico on one side of the home provides a covered parking area.

Wood floors and wood molding throughout the home combine with arched entryways and beamed ceilings to give the home a rich feel. An extra-wide hallway has doors that branch off into different rooms.

The largest by far is the dramatic 40-foot living room with beamed ceilings. Guests enter the home directly into this grand formal room, which stretches the entire depth of the house. The sun-drenched open space is ideal for grand-scale entertaining as it allows for several separate conversation areas and has a cozy wood-burning stone fireplace for gathering around on cool evenings.

Nearby is the dining room, which also has a beamed ceiling in addition to an arched double-door entry. Trendy light fixtures, including an artistic glass chandelier, wall sconces and built-ins with lighting, highlight this spacious dining room. It more than comfortably fits the owner's 10-person dining table with plenty of room left over to accommodate 20 guests.

The dining room can be accessed through both an entryway connecting it to the living room and a rear hallway. The rear hallway leads to the home's back entry, which looks just as grand as the front of the home.

A commercial-grade kitchen with a breakfast room and spacious family room are in the rear of the house. The kitchen features stylish stainless light fixtures along with stainless steel appliances, including a double oven, large refrigerator, warming drawer and a professional-grade stove.

The black marble floors are especially striking when paired with the stainless appliances and light beige cabinetry. This sunny space also benefits from multiple windows.

A sizable family room occupies the rear of the home and is more reminiscent of a sunroom as it's surrounded by walls of windows overlooking the grounds.

There's also a bedroom and an office on the main level along with a full bath and powder room. The office has two windows, built-in bookcases and an impressive light fixture over the desk. The office is a quiet place to work and catch up on some reading.

A winding wood staircase off the foyer leads to five bedrooms on the second floor. The second-floor hall is richly appointed with wood panel doors, molding and an impressive skylight and light fixture.

The largest of the bedrooms is the master suite which has red drapes, a ceiling fan and a private master bath. With black marble tile floors, black wood shutters and white tile walls, the bathroom makes a statement. There's also a sunny siting room nearby that can be used as a separate room.

Each of the bedrooms has hardwood flooring and wood blinds. Several are being used as relaxing lounge spaces instead of sleeping quarters. Three additional full baths are on the upper level.

One of the bedrooms, however, comes with a red door that allows access onto an upper-level outdoor patio. This large patio has a black wrought-iron railing and offers a scenic view of the grounds.
