Montgomery County police shoot and kill suicidal man
A 22-year-old man was shot and killed by Montgomery County police after he threatened to shoot himself and then told police he wanted officers to kill him, a spokeswoman said Monday.
Police identified the man Monday afternoon as Tracy Woodfork of the 5000 block of Volta Avenue in Bladensburg.
During the call, the man “at times wanted to kill himself and other times stated he wanted police to kill him,” Ms. Innocenti said.
Police traced the cell phone number to a residence in the 9500 block of Woodland Drive in Silver Spring. When they arrived on scene at about 4 a.m., they found Mr. Woodfork holding a gun at the bottom of an outdoor basement stairwell.
A 23-year-old woman, identified as the man’s girlfriend, was also in the house babysitting three children. Police were able to get the four out of the home, Ms. Innocenti said, before officers entered the home to get a better vantage point of Mr. Woodfork.
Ms. Innocenti said that at about 5 a.m., he began to walk up the stairwell with the firearm and during an “encounter,” was shot by police.
Mr. Woodfork was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, which police said is standard protocol.
