Bad-boy rocker Liam Gallagher, who founded superband Oasis with his brother Noel, turns 40 on Sept. 21. Mr. Gallagher’s wild antics make the foibles of the Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols look like child’s play. Mr. Gallagher, with his new band Beady Eye, performed the Oasis classic “Wonderwall” at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony. The List this week looks at the top 15 crazy moments of Mr. Gallagher’s pop career.

  • 15. Pulls out of tour — In 1996, Mr. Gallagher pulled out of Oasis‘ American tour 15 minutes before the plane was to take off to Chicago, claiming he had to go house-hunting. “We’ve got to be out by the weekend,” he said. “I’m not going around touring the U.S. when I’ve got nowhere to live. … I can’t go and look at houses while I’m in America trying to perform for silly … Yanks.”
  • 14. Dandruff or cocaine? — In an interview with Q magazine last year, Liam Gallagher, at one time known for using cocaine, said a fan once snorted his dandruff, mistaking it for the drug after he performed at Glastonbury. He said he suffered from psoriasis.
  • 13. Craves the spotlight — On April 30, 2012, just after Liam Gallagher’s favorite soccer team, Manchester City, beat rivals Manchester United, he interrupted a post-match news conference, saying to reporters “What do you want to know lads? … top of the league.”
  • 12. American tour — During the band’s first American tour, in 1994, Liam Gallagher took to changing the words of his brother’s songs so that they were offensive to both Americans and Noel.
  • 11. Barcelona — While on tour in Spain in May 2000, Mr. Gallagher made derogatory comments about his brother’s family. The brothers got into a fight, and Noel quit the tour. “If Liam wasn’t my brother I would have left the band a long time ago,” Noel said. At the same time, Liam’s wife, Patsy Kensit, walked out on him.
  • 10. MTV — In 1996, at the height of their success, Liam Gallagher backed out on Oasis‘ “MTV Unplugged” set just minutes before it was due to start. Noel apologized, saying his brother had a “sore throat,” but it didn’t stop Liam from watching the band perform from the balcony and heckling loudly between songs.

Baby bust up — Just hours after his wife gave birth to son Gene at London’s posh Portland Hospital on July 2, 2001, Liam Gallagher punched out photographer John Lillington, who had snapped the pop star while he was downing a Guinness across from the hospital. Mr. Gallagher was questioned by police at Marylebone Road police station.
  • 8. Takes on God —Liam Gallagher explained his religious views to the Observer: “I live for now, not for what happens after I die. If I die and there’s something afterwards, I’m going to hell, not heaven. I mean, the devil’s got all the good gear. What’s God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns.”
  • 7. Takes on the Beatles Liam Gallagher told the Observer that he was the reincarnation of John Lennon, despite having been born eight years before Lennon’s death. “I don’t think I am. I think I was. He’s me now.” He named his first son Lennon. In 1996, he hit back at George Harrison for criticizing Oasis, calling the Beatle “a nipple.”

Takes on Bono — In an interview with the London Sunday Times, Mr. Gallagher rejected any guidance about Christianity from U2 frontman Bono. “What can Bono tell me I don’t know?” Mr. Gallagher asked. “I’m not looking for guidance. There are days I believe and days I don’t. … I don’t need his guidance. He’d talk a glass eye to sleep.”
  • 5. Attacks fan — In 1998, Mr. Gallagher was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm after allegedly head-butting a British fan and breaking his nose.
  • 4. Attacks soccer star — In 2006, Liam Gallagher was banned from London’s exclusive Groucho Club in Soho after squirting a fire extinguisher at famed England soccer player Paul Gascoigne while he was eating soup.
  • 3. Attacks cyclist — In July 1997, Liam Gallagher was cautioned by the police after he leaned out of his Mercedes’ window, grabbed the shirt of a cyclist and pulled him along with the car. Witness Angela Deane told the Daily Mail: “The cyclist seemed very mild-mannered, and he didn’t want the fight or the confrontation. He looked as if he had been picked on. He didn’t go back and retaliate.”
  • 2. Awards ceremony — On receiving an award at the 2010 BRIT Awards for the best album of the past 30 years, Mr. Gallagher swore while he thanked all the former members of Oasis except for his brother. He then threw the award into the audience. As Gallagher left the stage, the camera cut to host Peter Kay, who called the star a rude name.
  • 1. Teeth knocked out — On Dec. 1, 2002, Liam Gallagher’s two front teeth were knocked out during a brawl in the disco of the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich. The singer underwent hours of emergency dental surgery to have tooth implants at a cost of $30,000, according to the Daily Mail. Oasis was forced to cancel the final leg of the band’s European tour after the fight. Mr. Gallagher was arrested for kicking a policeman in the chest and escaped time in prison by paying a large fine.
