A tractor trailer carrying a shipment of chicken nuggets overturned Wednesday on the Beltway, leading to the closure of the outer lanes of the roadway as officials worked to clean up diesel from the spill.

The crash was reported around 2 p.m. on the Beltway at the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and closed several lanes and ramps. A tractor trailer carrying chicken nuggets had flipped on its side and began spilling 150 gallons of fuel on the roadway, according to Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department spokesman Mark Brady.

A passenger vehicle was also involved in the crash. The driver of the tractor trailer and an occupant from the other vehicle both sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals. Neither of the individuals’ injuries were life-threatening, Mr. Brady said.

About half of the 150-gallon tank spilled onto the roadway, Mr. Brady said. Hazardous materials crews off-loaded the rest of the fuel from the vehicle’s fuel tank in order to prevent it from spilling. The truck’s cargo of chicken nuggets did not spill, officials said.

Maryland State Police were also on the scene. A spokesman estimated that roads opened back up around 3:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash had not been determined Wednesday.
