We were all shocked by the terrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Without reservation, Americans would embrace gun policy that could help prevent future tragedies from occurring. My concern is that many of the gun-control proposals are having an impact on the current level of gun ownership of law-abiding citizens.
Gun-control proposals that limit the type of firearms, ammunition, magazines and accessories that law-abiding citizens have always been privileged to own are being eliminated for reasons that do not involve these citizens. Clearly, the aforementioned commodities should not be available to criminals, the mentally incompetent or to those who are irresponsible. But it is unreasonable and insulting to enact policies that restrict law-abiding citizens' rights to firearms and accessories. Proposals that restrict the current level of ownership are unfair to those citizens who have demonstrated their patriotism as productive members of society.
It is not unreasonable to expect government leaders to recognize the social contributions of law-abiding citizens by not restricting their ownership of the firearms, ammunition, magazines and accessories of their choice.
