Al Gore: Republicans tell me privately they believe in global warming

- The Washington Times - Thursday, August 22, 2013

Former Vice President Al Gore said Republicans secretly tell him they believe in global warming because they're afraid to break ranks with the GOP.

"A lot of Republicans have shared with me privately their growing discomfort with the statements of some of the deniers in their ranks. Even though they're not yet willing to come back to advocate constructive policies, there is definitely movement," Mr. Gore told The Washington Post in an interview published Wednesday.

Adding that he's noticed a shift more at the local level than the national, Mr. Gore said he sees "the biggest shift of all in the business community."

"Every night on the news, it's like a nature hike through the book of revelations," he said. "People are noticing this. And simultaneously they're noticing the sharp drop in the cost of carbon-free, greenhouse gas-free energy, and the combination is pushing us over this political tipping point and the trend is unstoppable."

Gore also argued that warmer waters and higher sea levels can worsen storms.

"They're stronger now," he said. "The extreme events are more extreme. The hurricane scale used to be 1-5 and now they're adding a 6. The fingerprint of man-made global warming is all over these storms and extreme weather events."
