A dead body washed up Sunday at an island resort in the Maldives where British soccer player David Beckham and his family were spending their Christmas vacation.

Mr. Beckham, his wife Victoria and children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper were staying at the One and Only Reethi Rah resort near the capital Male, where guests pay up to $14,300 a night for a room in the exclusive hotel.

Then a man's body was discovered floating near the hotel's jetty. Investigations were underway to establish the cause of death of the man, who police identified as a Sri Lankan national, the Times of India reported.

"The body was removed to a morgue and investigations are underway," police spokesman Hassan Haneef told the Agence France-Presse.

In a separate incident, a storage hut containing a large stock of fireworks brought in for New Year's Eve exploded and caught fire on the island.

"A storage shelter burned to the ground before firefighters on boats brought the blaze under control yesterday," The Sun reported.
