LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Dream Act would be nightmare for America

We have kids coming out of high schools and colleges who can’t find jobs, and the competition will become even tougher if President Obama’s arrogant and unconstitutional Dream Act is enacted.

It is bothersome that Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, has a policy of helping children of illegal immigrants get a college education in Texas, and that Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, has his own backdoor version of the Dream Act. Metropolitan State University of Denver cut tuition in half for illegal immigrants, yet no such assistance is given to American kids whose parents are struggling to get them an education.

Assuming no fraud, it is conservatively estimated that 1 million illegal immigrants will eventually enroll in public institutions (state universities or community colleges) as a result of the Dream Act. It is estimated that it would cost American taxpayers $6.2 billion per year.

In 2010, Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican, wrote “that despite their current illegal status, Dream Act aliens will be given all the rights that legal immigrants receive — including the legal right to sponsor their parents and extended family members for immigration.” This would not be fair for people who have been waiting for years to come to our country.

We can’t enforce the laws we already have on the books. Until the borders are secure, any move toward amnesty will simply become a magnet for more illegal immigration. If anyone is under the illusion that the GOP will gain any Latino votes by passing a pro-immigration, Dream Act-type bill, they are only fooling themselves and the American people.
