Sources are telling Fox News that Sen. Robert Menendez failed to report at least one of the trips he took to the Dominican Republic on the plane of his friend and campaign donor, Dr. Salomon Melgen.
“He was on the doc’s jet in 2008 — that I guarantee,” said an unnamed source who claimed to have attended that same event, in the Fox News report.
Mr. Menendez, New Jersey Democrat, did not disclose that 2008 trip in annual filings, according to Fox News. The source said the trip was made in April 2008 to an invitation-only golf tournament at the exclusive vacation resort Casa de Campo, according to Fox News. Mr. Menendez reportedly stayed at the doctor’s villa at the resort, Fox News said.
If the flight and trip were paid for by private dollars, the senator would not be required to report it.
But, as Fox News reports, Mr. Menendez’s office has issued a statement saying the senator flew on Dr. Melgen’s plane only in 2010.
Mr. Menendez came under fire for his relationship with Dr. Melgen, after the ophthalmologist’s Florida offices were raided by FBI agents.
